Current technology is improving the longevity of components, which may allow the younger arthritic patient to return to more normal athletic activity. These include better bearing surfaces such as ceramics, metal-on-metal, and cross-linked polyethylene, which can withstand heavier stresses, and newer implants feature improved range of motion. In addition, surgeons can customize hip and knee implants based on the patient's size, sex, and activity level to restore more normal function. 

These component improvements mean younger patients who have arthritic joints no longer need to delay surgery and curtail activities. They can seek prompt primary surgery and, if necessary, revision surgery, to further extend the life of the implant.
