Stroke Program Overview

Beverly and Addison Gilbert hospitals' Stroke Program has been awarded the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get with the Guidelines® Stroke Silver Plus Performance Achievement Award, an award that recognizes the hospitals' success in delivering stroke care of the highest level according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. As designated Primary Stroke Service hospitals and members of both the American Stroke Association: Get with the Guidelines Program and the SCORE (Stroke COllaborative Reaching for Excellence) initiatives, Beverly and Addison Gilbert hospitals' Stroke Program encompasses a multi-faceted approach to care. It includes:

 

  • Community education to help individuals recognize the risk factors, signs and symptoms of stroke, as well as the importance of calling 911 when stroke stymptoms are present

  • Collaboration with the community's emergency medical technicians and paramedics

  • An exceptional, multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and others who are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are trained to diagnose stroke and administer the most effective life- and brain-saving treatment quickly

  • A partnership with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for patients who require neurosurgery or other highly specialized treatments

  • Help for individuals who need to manage stroke risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity

  • Ongoing monitoring, care and counseling for patients who have had a stroke

  • Full range of outpatient-based rehabilitative services for the neurologically impaired including speech, occupational and physical therapy services.

Use FAST to easily check if it might be a Stroke

F Face - Have the person smile. Is the face uneven; does one side droop down?

A Arms - Have the person hold out their arms.  Can they lift both of them easly; does one drift down?

S Speech - Have the person say a simple sentence, like, "The sky is blue".  Are they able to speak? Are the words slurred?  Do they say the wrong words?

T Time - Call 911 immediately if any of the signs are present
