Since your hands are so important in all areas of activities of daily living, leisure and work, you want to be guaranteed of receiving the most skilled care possible. Certified hand therapists have at least 5 years of clinical experience, 4000 hours or more of hand specialty experience and have passed a comprehensive exam in hand/upper extremity rehabilitation. They also must remain current with changes in hand therapy practice and re-certify every 5 years. Working with a certified hand therapist will assure you of receiving the best possible outcome for your individual situation.

 

Our certified hand therapists work with you, your surgeon, primary care physician or rheumatologist to formulate a plan of care to meet your goals. We strive to improve the function of your hand/upper body to improve your overall quality of life. Your therapist may evaluate and treat you in areas such as range of motion, swelling, pain, strength, wound and scar, and function.

Clinical Evaluation
Your occupational therapist will evaluate you for the following conditions:

  • All fractures, dislocations, or sprains of the hand/wrist/elbow/shoulder
  • Dequervains
  • Dupuytren's release
  • Joint contractures
  • Lateral/medial epicondylitis
  • Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Peripheral nerve compressions including carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel syndrome and radial nerve palsy
  • Sports injuries
  • Tendon and nerve injury and repairs
  • Tendonitis
  • Work related injuries
  • Wounds


Therapeutic Treatment
Based upon your evaluation, a plan of care will be developed which may include the following interventions:

  • Adaptive equipment education
  • Customized splinting
  • Desensitization programs
  • Edema management including manual edema mobilization
  • Functional retraining
  • Kinesiotaping
  • Modalities including low level laser
  • Pain management
  • Scar and soft tissue mobilizations
  • Therapeutic exercise programs
  • Wound care

 

Major health insurance companies cover most components of the Hand Therapy Program.  Please check with your insurance carrier to insure eligibility for reimbursement.
