Genetic Counseling and Testing
Assessing your risk and strategies for reducing it
We offer family history review and pre-test counseling to determine if genetic testing is right for you. Our nurse practitioners are specially trained to determine, through a comprehensive family history review and personal health history, your specific risk of carrying the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 genetic mutation, which has been linked to a higher risk for breast cancer. Risk/benefit counseling is offered regarding any decision to pursue further genetic testing, so you have sufficient information with which to make an informed decision. Those with positive or indeterminate results for the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 genetic mutation are referred for further counseling to our colleagues at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center.
Genetic Testing and Counseling services are provided to patients with a new diagnosis of breast cancer or family history. Certified genetic counselors work with each patient to conduct a thorough, comprehensive review of the patient’s medical history and determine next steps for testing.
