Neurological Rehabilitation

Learning how to live with a condition affecting your brain – such as a stroke, concussion, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson’s disease – can be a challenge. At Beverly Hospital, our team of physical therapists specially trained in neurological rehabilitation is here to help.

Neurological rehabilitation, also called neuro-rehab, helps people who have had a brain injury or other neurological impairment to regain their abilities and independence.

Our neuro-rehab specialists challenge the idea that the loss of abilities or function after a neurological injury or condition is always permanent. We offer the latest rehabilitation techniques to help optimize your capabilities and improve your quality of life.

Our neurological rehabilitation services are available at Beverly Hospital, Addison Gilbert Hospital, and the Lahey Outpatient Center in Danvers.

Conditions We Treat
The conditions treated by our neuro-rehab specialists include:

  • ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease)
  • Concussion (from an accident, fall, or sports injury)
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Neurotoxicity (damage caused by exposure to toxic substances)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Stroke
  • Torticollis in infants (a condition in which babies have a tilted head or difficulty turning their neck)
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Vertigo (dizziness)
  • Vestibular (inner-ear) disorders affecting balance
  • And others

Our Services
Our services include:

  • Helping people with balance problems regain their equilibrium
  • Special exercises for babies with torticollis
  • Speech therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Improvement of cognitive (thinking) abilities
  • Treatment for progressive neurological conditions
  • And more

We harness the power of our state-of-the-art technology when appropriate. For example, infrared video camera monitoring, which uses special goggles that patients wear as their eye movements are tracked, is available at all of our sites to aid in diagnosing and treating balance disorders.

We also offer a Maintenance Plus Program for ongoing care, where patients work with rehabilitation aides on a regular schedule and are periodically assessed to gauge their progress and adjust their therapy if necessary. This program is especially helpful to those with progressive neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease.

Our Expertise
We are highly experienced; some of our staff members have been with us for over a decade. Our trained and caring clinicians include:

  • Certified Neurological Clinical Specialists (NCS)
  • Hermann-trained clinicians for vestibular rehabilitation
  • Certified Exercise Experts of the Aging Adult (CEEAA specialists)
  • Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapists (COMT specialists)

We offer a truly multidisciplinary approach to care, which means that a team of providers is involved in your rehabilitation, including audiologists, occupational therapists, orthopedic specialists, and others. Your care will be personalized for your specific needs and goals.

Best of all, many of our services are located on the same campus. If you need more than one service (for example, a neuro-rehab and an audiology appointment), we do everything possible to schedule your appointments in the same day, so you only have to make one trip.

Appointments
Appointments are available promptly, including within 48 hours for dizziness. Appointments may be made at any of our locations by calling 978.816.3255.
